Slugging - Let Your Skin Shine.

Slugging - Let Your Skin Shine.

Whilst there are many popular beauty trends Slugging is certainly one that has caught the headlines, partly due to its simplicity and bizarre title. In essence, the facial skin is covered in an occlusive moisturiser, these create a physical barrier on the skin to prevent trans epidermal water loss and lock in hydration. Thus protecting the skin’s outer most layer (the Stratum Corneum) from dehydration, premature ageing and enabling it to heal more quickly. The thick, shiny appearance of the skin after application is likened to that of a slug, hence the treatment name.

What is the Stratum Corneum and why is it important to protect it?

This is also sometimes referred to as a “brick wall”, consisting of strong skin cells called corneocytes which are configured in a brick like structure, being bound together by mortar like lipids. The healthy functioning of this layer is crucial to ensure water does not escape from the body, thus preventing dehydration. It also acts as a solid barrier to prevent harmful environmental toxins and pathogens from entering the body.

Factors that can contribute to Stratum Corneum damage.

There are many factors that can contribute to the deterioration of the condition of the Stratum Corneum. These can independently cause damage or in combination. Such factors include excessive UV ray (sun) exposure, humidity, dry environments (natural or air conditioning), over exfoliation, some alkaline detergents/soaps and genetic characteristics resulting in skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Whilst most people that suffer from a skin condition will be familiar with recognising the symptoms, for many these are sporadic problems and can therefore be harder to identify and treat if little experience is had. Some common signs to look out for are dry, itchy or scaly skin, rough or discoloured patches, inflammation, sensitivity or infections.

What were the reasons for Slugging becoming such a hit?

The huge rise in popularity of this treatment is down to social media through platforms such as Tiktok and reddit. However unlike some of the trends that are rooted in social media this one is actually backed by Dermatologists and has been recommended by them for years as a last stage application for a dry skin regimen. The ease of application and noticeable results have catapulted it to success as a “go to” beauty tip.

What skin problems does it address?

As Slugging essentially acts as a protective barrier protecting the surface of the Stratum Corneum it seals in moisture, preventing dehydration and blocks out external aggressive factors that can contribute to its deterioration. In this regard all the previously mentioned skin ailments can be greatly reduced or eradicated by the regular topical application of an occlusive moisturiser. Skin is left smoother, softer, and the appearance of fine lines can be reduced through the increased levels of hydration.

It can therefore be especially beneficial to those suffering from dry and sensitive skin, caused by genetic factors or skincare routine excesses such as over exfoliation. Slugging can also be beneficial to acne-prone/oily skins but should only be conducted in a targeted fashion to address problem areas. It is recommended that a dermatologist should be consulted on a one to one basis to advise on whether this is suitable for an individual’s skin.

Prevention is better than a cure.

Using an occlusive product for topical application doesn’t have to just be to target problems, the daily application of a facial oil can prevent many forms of skin damage and help to repair existing ones. Only an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) product will protect against the creation of UV damage but facial oils will guard against skin’s dehydration, the harsh effects of environmental factors, and can alleviate some of the visible signs of premature ageing. Make Me… Youthful Intensive Facial Oil combines Marula Oil, Evening Primrose Oil and Rosehip Oil to rejuvenate and protect skin. It’s ultra light formula can visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles whilst improving skin’s elasticity and skin tone.

Combined with rejuvenating Dead Sea Mineral Salt this oil not only protects skin but also nourishes it, making Slugging even more effective. This easily absorbed formula can be used every day as part of the skincare regimen and reapplied during the day or when needed to give an extra hydration boost and a beautiful, healthy glow.
