Keeping Skin Healthy Through Ramadan.

Keeping Skin Healthy Through Ramadan.

Ramadan Mubarak to all Muslims.

Nearly a quarter of the world’s population partake in Ramadan each year. It is always the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, in 2022 this falls between Saturday the 2nd of April to Sunday the 1st of May.

During the month of Ramadan Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours, fasting on a daily basis throughout the whole period. This allows for a devotion to faith and acts as a reminder of the suffering of the poor. Two meals are allowed each day, the Suhoor just before dawn and the Iftar directly after sunset. The end of Ramadan is marked by a celebration called Eid ul Fitr which is breaking the fast and celebrating the strength Allah has given to make it through the month.

The term Ramadan means “intense heat”, referring to the scorching of the earth during the Summer months which causes the loss of food and water.

Skin health mindfulness tips.

As the month of fasting progresses it is common to experience some health side effects, all of which can be balanced by a healthy diet and the drinking of plenty of water during allowed times alongside a rigorously followed skincare routine. The body has the ability to adapt to a new eating pattern and the skin as the largest organ of the body also needs some help to do this. One of the main impacts on the skin is dehydration, this can lead to the creation of dry patches, the appearance of facial fine lines akin to premature ageing, a loss of skin tone and break outs. Ensure between 1.5 to 2 litres of water are drunk each day between Iftar and Suhoor, this will help the skin stay healthy. Whilst it’s advisable to limit UV ray exposure this is still required, the sun’s rays absorbed by the skin can provide the body with its daily amount of Vitamin D, an essential vitamin that strengthens the immune system and keeps bones, teeth and muscles healthy so it’s important to still get some sun. Avoiding burning is essential though, and there are differing levels of resistance to this depending on skin type, on average 20 minutes is safe but this will vary and it’s advised to follow guidelines for your own skin type. It’s always recommended that an SPF moisturiser or suncream is used when exposing skin to the sun for any noticeable period of time.

Cutting back/cutting out caffeine based products can also help the skin and body during fasting. Studies have shown that caffeine can inhibit the absorption of vitamins and minerals whilst actually expediting the expulsion of these from the body, further adding to the loss of absorption.

Other factors to consider when looking at skin health are the usual environmental drying effects synonymous with the changeable weather in the UK at this time of the year, compounded by the exposure to warm/cold air conditioning. Paying extra attention to skincare routines will maintain and protect healthy, youthful looking skin through Ramadan and seasonal variations but it doesn’t have to be overly time consuming. La Cure’s Dead Sea Mineral skincare range and Make Me’s…Make Me Youthful anti-ageing range contains many hero products that fit easily into daily skincare regimes and can add a wonder boost for tired skin when you’re on the go.

Key care stages for optimal skin health during and after Ramadan.

Whilst the majority of skin hydration is gained through water intake it’s still essential to give skin a big moisture boost with topically applied products, especially during Ramadan when specific skin conditions such as red patches, dry patches, fine lines and dullness might be experienced due to the change in diet cycle.

The La Cure and Make Me… ranges expertly blend Jordanian Dead Sea Mineral Salt or Mud with the highest grade natural ingredients to nourish, protect and rebuild the skin’s structure and natural barriers. Skin is left dewy, more youthful looking, comfortably soft and supremely hydrated.

Whilst being a professional, luxury skincare range used in spas around the world La Cure is also available to buy for use at home.

All of the above products are gentle enough to be used on a daily basis but it is also advisable to apply a face mask once a week. La Cure’s Mineral Mud Therapy is a little luxury treat in a pot, transporting the mind and soul. Pure Jordanian Dead Sea Mineral Salt is combined with Honey, and Sweet Almond Oil to remove impurities, improve skin tone and relieve the symptoms of dry, itchy skin. Skin is left looking fresh, and visibly healthy with a youthful glow.

It's also very important to look after your body's skin and show it some T.L.C. during this time. Whilst a change in diet cycle and reduced water consumption may show visibly on your face, the body also still benefits greatly from intensive moisturising and will show signs of ageing and dehydration if not looked after. Apply La Cure's Papaya Body Butter daily and after cleansing to envelope your skin in a silky veil with a beautifully delicate Papaya fragrance that will transport your mind to more tropical places. The light butter absorbs easily without any sticky residue and can be applied before dressing. Dead Sea Mineral Salts are combined with Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil which lock in essential vitamins and minerals whilst leaving skin beautifully soft and hydrated.
